our history

A rich history of caring for the Jewish community

1774

Sir Moses Montefiore, the man after whom Montefiore is named, was born in Italy. After moving to England, he rose to prominence, proving to be an astute businessman. Throughout his life he devoted his time and resources to community and civic affairs, and to the welfare of the Jewish people.

1889

On October 27, The Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home (The Home), opened its doors in South Dowling Street, Moore Park. It was a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) and provided aged care services.

1924

Montefiore cared for 18 residents and moved to Victoria Road, Bellevue Hill.

1939

Due to the growth of the Jewish community and its aged population, Montefiore moved and reopened at Hunters Hill, then caring for 26 adults.

1940 - 1946

The Army occupied the Hunters Hill campus. The Jewish population of Sydney doubled and expansion of the Home was an urgent priority.

1946 – 1996

Hunters Hill underwent a series of upgrades and an expansion leading to its current configuration (low-care hostel, high-care nursing home and dementia-specific accommodation). Today it is home to 287 residents.

1991

Montefiore officially opened its second residential aged care facility in a heritage building at Woollahra. Today Woollahra is home to 41 residents in a low-care hostel environment.

2002

Montefiore acquired Camelot Nursing Home (now known as Maroubra Shores), an 80-bed high-care facility in Maroubra that serviced the wider community.

2006

Montefiore officially opened stage 1 of its new Randwick Campus providing accommodation for 276 residents (107 low-care hostel places, 109 high-care nursing home places and two 30-bed dementia-specific units).

2007

Burger Centre seniors’ day centre moved to the Randwick Campus and became a joint venture with JewishCare, joining Montefiore’s Club Monte day centre at Hunters Hill offering social support to people living in the community.

2010

Montefiore launched its Home Care service, now known as Help at Home, bringing the organisation’s expertise in clinical and allied health care to support older people living independently in the community.

2020 and beyond

Montefiore continued to expand with the launch of retirement living development, M by Montefiore, completed in 2020, which sold out in 2022.

Burger Centre North at the Hunters Hill Campus opened in February 2021.

2023

After over 20 years, Montefiore made the difficult decision to close the Maroubra Shores facility. All residents were supported by Montefiore to find suitable alternative accommodation, including many who found a new home at our Randwick and Hunters Hill facilities.
