What we offer

Socialisation Program

The Burger Centre is a safe and welcoming space for seniors, providing opportunities to connect, learn, enhance well-being, and most importantly, have fun. Our programs are designed to support seniors in maintaining their independence, staying active, and remaining connected to their community, all while continuing to live at home.

We understand that staying healthy – physically, mentally, and emotionally – is key to a fulfilling life, which is why we offer a diverse range of programs tailored to individual needs. Many of our programs are accessible through the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) or a Home Care Package (HCP).

We are proud to offer dedicated Russian-language programs on Wednesdays and Fridays. The programs are run in both our centre-based respite and social support programs. All staff and volunteers on this day are bi-lingual speakers and have Russian heritage.

Each program includes door-to-door transport, a freshly prepared kosher morning tea, and a three-course lunch. Participants also have access to our exceptional facilities, such as:

  • Pool, library, and cinema
  • Beautiful gardens and balcony areas
  • Music and art rooms

If a client moves to a nursing home or hostel, the Burger Centre is no longer an option for them. Most residential facilities have an active leisure and lifestyle program and are included in the fees paid to the facility. However, the Burger Centre does have access to a small amount of funds to support Burger Centre clients who move into a non-Jewish residential facility and feel their cultural needs are not being met or are feeling socially isolated from the community. In these circumstances, please speak to the Burger Centre Manager who has the discretion to approve attendance.

A client may cease to attend the Burger Centre when:

  • The individual no longer requires or desires the service, i.e., they may have moved away.
  • The person’s functional ability, because of their dementia or other illness, requires care the centre is not able to support.
  • Two people are required to assist with transfers.
  • There is dual incontinence.
  • Client behaviour adversely affects other clients at the centre and behavioural management strategies prove ineffective.

Staff members at the Burger Centre speak several community languages such as Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Hungarian and French. If you prefer to speak one of these languages, your orientation and assessment will be completed by one of our bilingual workers, or our skilled staff will be assisted by a confidential interpreter service. Due to the diversity of backgrounds of our members it is likely that while at the centre you will meet another client who speaks the same language as you.
