The importance of allied health

Allied health. It’s a term many people haven’t heard of it before entering aged care themselves or researching aged care options for a loved one. So, what exactly does it mean? And why is it so important?

Think of allied health as all the different specialists you might see to treat a range of conditions and illnesses, outside of a doctor or nurse. That could include a physiotherapist, dietician, occupational therapist, social worker, or speech pathologist.

Allied health professionals work best as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing personal and specialised support to help with someone’s individual needs. They work together to target specific issues but are also important for maintaining overall good health as we age.

Unlike many other aged care providers, Montefiore employees over 120 Allied Health professionals, instead of using external providers. This means residents enjoy working with the same dedicated team over time, building trust and knowledge. Each resident receives personalised and tailored care based on their individual needs and interests.

“Montefiore’s Allied Health team is a unique group of dedicated professionals who are focused on providing real holistic care. The number of on-staff allied health support is unrivalled in any other organisation,” says Henry Chien, General Manager Allied Health Business Services. “We are partners with our residents in their journey from day one and are always looking for opportunities to better tailor our service offerings to meet the evolving needs of the residents who are entrusted within our care.”

Patricia, a Hunters Hill resident, lives with osteoarthritis. Two years ago, her quality of life was being severely hindered by her pain and she was facing a future of progressive disability with fear and anxiety.

“I just couldn’t cope living by myself, and I knew that I was going to be able to access the most wonderful care more easily living at Montefiore…I just didn’t realise until I was living here what a difference it would make to my everyday life,” says Patricia.

Physiotherapy Manager Lynette Tapsell has been treating Patricia since she arrived at Montefiore. Treatment has involved different therapies, including laser and the use of the TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation) machine, as well as dry needling.

“I was initially very hesitant to let Lyn try the needling on me, no-one likes needles, do they? But the next day…my pain was so much better, it gave me huge relief, it was life changing,” says Patricia.

Patricia is just one of many residents whose quality of life has significantly improved by working with Montefiore’s dedicated allied health team. It’s all about our investment in expertise and dedication to providing exceptional care that enhances choice, dignity and wellbeing.
