Why Zelia and Hyman love their M by Montefiore lifestyle

Zelia and Hyman share highlights of their new retirement lifestyle at M by Montefiore since they made the move in March.

Moving to M by Montefiore from their family home on the Central Coast, Zelia and Hyman were concerned about how they’d fit everything into an apartment.

“I just couldn’t imagine the space,” admits Zelia. But with a little help from their interior architect granddaughter, they downsized their belongings and were delighted with the result. Instead of being weighed down with “stuff”, they only kept special belongings to make their new apartment feel like home. “We feel so much lighter and refreshed without all the clutter.”

Location, location, location

A few minor illnesses and increasing candles on their birthday cakes prompted the couple’s decision to move to Sydney. M’s Randwick location is ideal for them – close to beaches and Centennial Park and more importantly, only minutes from family. “It’s absolutely wonderful to be so near our children and 10 grandchildren,” says Zelia.

Also important to the Kotkins was finding a secure home, with services available to help them to live independently. Montefiore’s reputation for leading aged services, including neighbouring residential care if needed in the future, was integral to their choice.

Convenience is another bonus. “We’ve always kept kosher, so we would travel to Sydney and fill the Esky to take back,” says Zelia. “Now everything is close by.” Adds Hyman: “We love the kosher frozen meals here at M as well, and the breakfasts.”

Community best

While the Club Lounge is serving takeaway during lockdown, in ordinary times the breakfast table is the social hub of this growing community. “We often extend the tables and everyone chats about their plans for the day,” says Zelia, who is a founding member of the recently established Residents’ Committee. “Once COVID is over, we’re looking forward to planning more special events and activities,” she says.

Card games and movie nights in the in-house cinema are on hold for now, but Hyman and Zelia have been impressed with the COVID response from Village Manager Patrick and the Concierge team. “Everyone is working to keep us safe, and if you need something, they’ll help to organise it,” says Hyman.

No place like home

Sitting in their living room, the couple reflect on their favourite aspects of their new home and lifestyle. Hyman loves the fact that maintenance is taken care of. “I was a keen gardener until my back went. Now we have flowerpots and herbs for the balcony. And I don’t have to worry about hedges to trim or dripping taps to fix!”

For Zelia, it’s the ambience of their new home. “The apartment is bright and open and the amenities are five-star, yet it’s so warm and inviting.” She also has some sage advice for anyone considering the move: “Do it while you can – don’t hesitate! It’s a wonderful place to be.”
