Frequently asked questions

What makes Montefiore different from other residential aged care providers?

From your very first interaction with us, you will experience the exceptional standards of care and commitment to excellence that has made Montefiore one of Australia’s leading aged care specialists for more than 130 years.

We welcome you as an individual – including your past experiences, family, friends, personal preferences, joys, and the challenges in your life. We strive to make your Montefiore Experience as unique as you are.

As a not-for-profit organisation, Montefiore is motivated by care, not returns. That means 24-hour nursing cover, and a Residential Care staff ratio significantly higher than the industry average. We employ more than 120 allied health professionals who work to deliver holistic and personalised care (go to Clinical Expertise for more information).

What types of Residential Care do you provide?

We provide three main types of residential care:

  • Hostel (low-care needs)
  • Nursing Home (high-care needs)
  • Dementia Living – secure, specialised care and support for people with a dementia diagnosis (see Specialist Dementia Care for more information).

Go to Our Locations for more information about the types of residential care available at each of our campuses.

How much does residential care cost at Montefiore?

You’ll find an explanation of our fees under Fee Schedules.

Do you offer respite (short stay) care?

Yes, we offer short term care for a minimum of 2 weeks at all our residential care facilities, subject to availability. The Australian Government provides compensation for up to 63 days per financial year for respite care. This can be taken all at once or over several visits. You will need to complete an ACAT Assessment which includes your eligibility for respite. Go to Respite Care for more information.

What is an ACAT?

Before you can apply for respite or permanent aged care in NSW, you will need to have an assessment from your local care assessment team – known as an ACAT assessment. This confirms the level of support currently required and defines the personal care plan for your provider. To organise your ACAT, go to myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422.

Why should I arrange Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship prior to admission?

Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship may be arranged through your solicitor. Together they allow your authorised representative to make financial and medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so, as well as allowing them to sign any necessary documentation on your behalf.

Can I have my own doctor?

Yes, certainly. Montefiore provides registered nursing care but not direct medical care, so residents may either continue to see their own General Practitioner, or we can provide contact details for several GPs who can visit you at Montefiore as needed. It is the responsibility of the resident or their representative to manage their own GP relationship and medical communications.

Am I allowed to sleep offsite?

Yes, absolutely. The Government allows permanent residential care consumers to spend up to 52 nights per year away from the facility without it affecting your permanent status.

Can I bring my own furniture?

Yes, we would like you to make your room feel like home. Many residents bring a favourite chair, cabinet, pictures and ornaments. We provide electrically operated beds that are required for your safety, care and wellbeing. Please note all furniture needs to be assessed for safety by our Occupational Therapy team.

Can I live at Montefiore if I am not Jewish?

Yes, Montefiore welcomes residents from diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds. Montefiore Residential Care operates according to a Modern Orthodox Jewish ethos. In communal areas and dining facilities, Jewish customs are observed, and kosher food is served. Our dedicated Spiritual and Cultural department will work with you to support your personal religious practices in your own room.

What health and wellbeing services does Montefiore provide?

Montefiore has a large range of allied health services available to our residents, from occupational therapy and physical therapy, to creative therapy, dietetics and more. Go to Allied Health for a full list of services available.
